The trial in Athens (two types)
1) the “dike” process
2) the “graph” process
1) the “dike” process
The “dike” trial began at the request of the victim or his legal representative.
The plaintiff was personally interested in the outcome of the case. He, as a rule, sought financial compensation for damage. The plaintiff had the right to terminate the process at any time. I had to pay a court fee (a case of harm, equipment breakdown, damage to livestock, leased out, murder – a matter of private prosecution).
2) the “graph” process
The “graph” process could begin at the request of any citizen.
The plaintiff did not receive pecuniary compensation in the event of a positive decision. However, the plaintiff, who won the case of tax evasion, illegal use of another’s property, received part of the fine imposed on the culprit. The plaintiff was obliged to bring the case to the end. The court fee was not paid.
Sycophants are professional complainants.
Cases: treason, insult to the gods, theft of temple property.
