| When walking, the muscles of the legs and body contract and relax in a certain order, squeezing the veins and pushing blood to the heart. Thus, in a walking person, venous blood from the lower body returns to the heart faster than in a person who is standing still. The load on the heart is reduced even with leisurely walking.
