There are two charged balls on a smooth wooden table. At the initial moment, the balls are kept at rest. How will the energy of the electric field created by the charges of the balls change if the balls are released? Does the answer depend on whether the balls have charges of the same sign or opposite?

The energy of the electric field will decrease in any case.
Decision. Under the influence of electrical forces, both balls will start to move, that is, their kinetic energy will begin to increase. Consequently, according to the law of conservation of energy, the energy of the electric field created by the balls will decrease. This will happen both in the case when the balls are charged with the same name – then they will begin to move away from each other due to repulsion, and in the case when the balls are charged differently – then they will approach each other due to attraction.
