They say that it was easier for Christopher Columbus to reach America than to return. Is this true and why?

Columbus sailed to America just north of the equator under the pressure of east winds – trade winds. There are no oncoming trade winds, so Columbus had to return first to the north (along the coast of Mexico, along the Gulf Stream), and then catch a favorable wind towards Europe.
