Two identical capacitors were charged to the same voltage and disconnected from the source. One of them was then immediately discharged, and some heat was released in the process. In another, the plates were first brought together and only then discharged. In the second case, the thermal effect was less. Why?
The forces of electric attraction of the plates in the process of their convergence did work, by the amount of which the energy of the electric field decreased, and hence the amount of heat released.
