What are breathing cycles? How do they come about?

Breathing cycles are rhythmic alternations of inhalation and exhalation. Inhalation is an active process that consumes energy and is carried out due to the contraction of the intercostal muscles, the diaphragm and the action of the suction force of the chest; exhalation is passive.
