What are magnetic field lines? What is the chosen direction of these lines?

The lines of force of the magnetic field are imaginary lines, tangents to which at each point of the field coincide in direction with the vector of magnetic induction. The direction of the magnetic field line is, by agreement, the direction in which the magnetic field orients the north pole of the magnetic needle.
