What are the features of breeding work with microorganisms?

| The selection of microorganisms has a number of specific features. Microorganisms, as a rule, have fewer genes than animals and plants; the mechanisms of regulation of gene activity are simpler. In addition, the breeder has an unlimited amount of material to work: billions of cells can be grown on nutrient media in a matter of days. Mutagenesis is widely used in the selection of microorganisms, and since most microorganisms are haploid, mutant forms can be detected already in the first generation. In addition, a combination of genes is used by conjugation – the exchange of genetic material between bacterial cells.
