In the organ of hearing, in addition to the inner ear, the middle ear has developed, in the cavity of which there is one auditory ossicle – the stapes. It transmits and amplifies sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear, where the auditory receptor is located. The middle ear arose in connection with the life of amphibians in the terrestrial-air environment, since air has a weak sound conductivity compared to water.
