Rene Descartes (1596-1650) saw the main goal of science in man’s achievement of domination over the forces of nature. Science must be of practical use. Descartes considered the human mind to be the source of reliable knowledge. Mathematics was for him the ideal and the model for all other sciences. Descartes created analytical geometry, introduced the concept of a variable.
