| The Crusaders simply called themselves Christians; the Byzantines and Muslims called them “Franks”. The Byzantines called themselves romios; Muslims called them giaours (infidels) or Greeks, in contrast to the “Franks”; Catholics called the Byzantines griffins. Muslims called themselves Muslim (obedient to God); the Byzantines called the eastern Muslims Turks, and the crusaders called Saracens.
