What is a nuclear chain reaction?

The neutrons emitted in each fission event of a uranium nucleus can cause fission of neighboring nuclei, which also emit neutrons that can cause further fission. As a result, the number of fissile nuclei increases rapidly, and the nuclear reaction becomes self-sustaining. This nuclear reaction is called a chain reaction.
