The ancient Greek polis is a city-state. In addition to the city, this state included the surrounding villages, estates of the rich. The inhabitants of all Greek city-states spoke the same language, they had a common culture and religion. The largest cities were Athens, Sparta, Miletus. The inhabitants of the policies grew olive trees, from the fruits of which they made oil, grapes, and were engaged in handicrafts. The polis was ruled by the council of the nobility – the Areopagus. The common people – demos were not allowed to be governed, they were constantly in need. Therefore, the demos sought to achieve the right to rule the state themselves and to abolish debt slavery.
