| The source of alpha particles was placed in a chamber with a built-in screen in one of the walls, which glowed under the impact of charged particles. When filling the chamber with nitrogen, flashes of light appeared on the screen. As a result of the experiments, Rutherford suggested that the screen glows under the influence of some charged particles emitted from the nitrogen atom when alpha particles collide with it.
