| According to Schmidt’s hypothesis, the planets arose from a cold cloud of gas and dust, the particles of which revolved in different orbits around the formed sun. The earth grew to its present size in several hundred million years. Due to the decay of radioactive elements, the bowels of the Earth were heated and melted. The heavy elements settled and formed a nucleus, while the light ones floated up and formed a crust. When particles swarming around the embryos of planets clumped together, planetary satellites arose.
