What is the biological role of double-stranded DNA molecules acting as the custodian of hereditary information?

DNA is a carrier of genetic information recorded in the form of a nucleotide sequence using a genetic code. Two fundamental properties of living organisms are associated with DNA molecules – heredity and variability. In a process called DNA replication, two copies of the original chain are formed, inherited by daughter cells during division, so the resulting cells are genetically identical to the original.
