What is the difference between heterotrophic organisms and autotrophic?

All other organisms that occupy subsequent trophic levels are classified as heterotrophs – feeding on prepared organic substances. Heterotrophs decompose, rearrange and absorb complex organic substances synthesized by primary producers.
