| During intrauterine development and in newborns, there is a red bone marrow in all parts of the bones, which performs a hematopoietic and protective function. In an adult, it is preserved only in the cells of the spongy substance of flat and tubular bones; in the diaphysis of tubular bones, the cavity is filled with yellow bone marrow, which contains fat cells and participates in the metabolism of bone tissue.
