What is the phenomenon of thermionic emission?

The phenomenon of emission of electrons from the surface of heated metals is called thermionic emission. Thermionic emission resembles the process of evaporation of a liquid, with the difference that charged particles – electrons – “evaporate” from the surface of a heated metal, and neutral molecules – from a liquid.
