What is the significance of furrows and convolutions in the structure of the cerebral hemispheres?

The deep grooves of the cortex of each hemisphere are divided into lobes: frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal. Different functions of the cortex are associated with different lobes. Between the furrows are the folds of the cortex of the hemispheres – convolutions. This structure can significantly increase the surface of the cortex of the hemispheres.
