What is the value of civil society?

Civil society is a community of citizens (within the country) that is able to recognize and defend their interests, perhaps even against the will of the ruling elite. These interests affect personal or public life, as well as the sphere of public administration.
Civil society is free of direct influence from the state and its officials, but at the same time it is organized, internally ordered and interacts with the state on an equal footing.
