The gray matter is represented by the bodies of neurons. On the cross section of the spinal cord, it looks like the wings of a flying butterfly. It distinguishes between front and rear horns. In the front horns, the bodies of motor neurons are located, in the back horns, the insertion ones. There are side horns in the thoracic spinal cord between the front and rear horns. White matter is nerve fibers. They form the ascending and descending pathways along which excitation is delivered to the brain and spinal cord.
