| What peoples living along the shores of the southern seas are most reminiscent of the ancient Greeks? Which ones resemble steppe nomads? Who are the Indians and the Chinese like?
Most of all, the Greeks are reminiscent of the inhabitants of the Indian sea coasts – the ancestors of the modern Tamils, Sinhalese, Malays and Bengalis who settled on the shores of Indonesia. They, like the Greeks, felt themselves equally “children of the earth” and “children of the sea”. “Sea” nomads appeared later (in the X-XII centuries), when the inhabitants of Indonesia – the Malays – settled most of the islands of the Pacific Ocean – Polynesia. On the contrary, the Han Chinese were more reminiscent of the Romans in their reluctance to explore the sea.
