What prevented the Boers (Afrikaners) from creating a strong state in southern Africa, as, for example, the North American colonists did?

The Boers are great, they never stopped fighting for their independence, even when their colony was occupied by British troops. In principle, sooner or later they could create a strong state if the world’s largest diamond deposit had not been found on their territory. In connection with the outbreak of the diamond rush, a stream of immigrants from Europe and the USA poured into both Boer republics, England almost went crazy from the loss of such wealth, and immediately declared war on the Boers.
