What results were obtained in Rutherford’s experiments on observing the scattering of alpha particles as they pass through thin layers of matter?

In the experiments of Rutherford, it was found that alpha particles penetrate through thin metal plates, almost without deviating from a straight path. So, when passing through a layer of gold, most alpha particles are deflected at an angle of no more than 1 – 2 °. At the same time, a small part of the alpha particles was deflected at much larger angles.
