What shape does the mirror need to be in order to focus the rays coming from a closely spaced point light source? In what telescopic system are mirrors of this shape used?
The shape of the mirror is ellipsoid. Rays from a point light source placed at one of the foci of an ellipsoid with an internal reflecting surface will be collected at its other focus. A mirror with an ellipsoidal surface is used in the Gregory telescopic system as a secondary mirror, concavely facing the primary mirror. The focus of the main mirror is aligned with one of the focuses of the ellipsoid. In another focus, an image of a space object appears.
