| Severe penalties were established for attempts on the life of a free person and on his property. With the advent of these laws, government officials had to adhere to them unswervingly, as did the ordinary members of the Roman community. One consul was elected from among the patricians, the other from among the plebeians. Marriages between patricians and plebeians were allowed.
