Which European countries were most active in the First Crusade and why?

The most active crusaders were the French and the Germans. France did not wage wars, and feudalism was already highly developed, so there were many “unemployed” poor knights. In Germany, the wars for investiture have just died down; many of the vanquished dreamed of earning forgiveness in the crusade.
