Which states of the Middle East were the strongest when Thales was young? What changed by the end of his life?

Around 625 BC Assyria remained the strongest power in the Middle East (where the literate king Ashur-banapal had just died). Babylonia, Egypt, Media and the nomadic power of the Scythians competed with her. At the end of Thales’ life (550 BC) Assyria was destroyed long ago by the Medes and Babylonians. The Scythians were driven out of the Middle East by the Medes; the strengthening of Persia began – next to Media.
