They were conservatives, because they tried to preserve the leading role of the Roman peasants – “farmers” in a society where the leaders of the new economy were horsemen – “capitalists”. Riders are wealthy citizens who can buy a war horse and armor. Later, horsemen began to invest their capital in workshops, in the payment of taxes, and gradually became the most important class in Rome.
