Why are compressed gases contained in special cylinders?

For storage and transportation of gases, they are strongly compressed. Therefore, the pressure produced by them on the walls of the vessel in which they are enclosed is very great. Due to such a high pressure, gases are contained in special cylinders that can withstand it.
