Why are most of the plants in the Gymnosperms department called evergreens?

1) plants from the Gymnosperms department are called evergreens due to the lack of their usual autumn leaf fall;
2) the modified needle-like leaves of gymnosperms fall off, but not all at once, for example, in spruce needles live 5-7 years, and in pine – 2-3 years.
