Why are protein biosynthesis reactions called matrix?

1) The matrix is the object from which the copy is taken.
2) A portion of a DNA molecule is a matrix for the synthesis of i-RNA,
3) the i-RNA molecule is the matrix for the assembly of the protein molecule.
