| Boundless open spaces formed a sense of distance and breadth among the inhabitants of the steppes. Nomads lived in the steppes, and then free Cossacks. There was no landlord tenure. Open spaces, the need to protect their lands from the raids of nomads and mountain peoples have brought up collectivism and swiftness among the inhabitants of the steppes.
