Why are winter crops sometimes cut out during snowy winters?

For a favorable overwintering of winter crops, a layer of loose snow cover 30-40 cm high is sufficient. A layer thicker than 50 cm may in some cases be harmful to plants. This happens when it snows early and the soil remains slightly frozen. The thick snow cover does not transfer heat well. The result is high temperatures that can be fatal to plants.
