Why did American workers choose a peaceful economic struggle for their rights over radical calls for violence?

The North of the US immediately became industrial, bypassing “feudalism” – all people immediately had certain rights. Strong unions. Easy to make money. And a warm climate – there are no extra costs for food and clothing. Housing made of thin plywood – if only beautiful. It’s easier to come to an agreement than to destroy everything.
It’s different in the southern states. Strong social division. Negroes are people. second grade. The industry is weaker. Trade unions are northern.
