Why did Charlemagne choose the nickname David?

King David is the second king of Israel and one of the most striking biblical figures. He is revered by all three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Anointed to reign by the prophet Shmuel, King David conquered the Jebusites (the pre-Jewish population of Judea, who founded the city of Jerusalem at the end of the 3rd millennium BC) and rebuilt Jerusalem, making it the capital of a large and powerful Jewish state.
