Why did contemporaries criticize Lamarck’s theory?

Lamarck mistakenly believed that environmental change always causes beneficial changes in organisms. In addition, he could not explain where the “striving for progress” arises in organisms, and why it should be considered a hereditary property of organisms to respond to external influences.
