| Why did Homer’s poems become extremely popular among the Hellenes in the 8th-6th centuries BC – much later than the events that are reflected in them?
Apparently, in the era of long voyages and overseas colonization, the Hellenes wanted to see their ancestors as sailors and conquerors like themselves. Homer chose the era when the Achaeans first came out of the Balkan hinterland to the sea and began predatory raids on coastal cities.
