Why did India become the object of rivalry among several powers at once? Did this country attract Europeans with anything else besides its treasures?
For Europeans, India was a rich and attractive land. The European nobility was willing to pay huge sums of money for Indian spices, fabrics and jewelry. The struggle for India began in the 16th century, when the first Portuguese colony appeared on Hindustan. Soon, rivalry for Indian wealth and domestic markets developed between Portugal, Spain, France, England and the Netherlands.
