Why did Martin Luther’s ideas receive wide support from various segments of the German population?

The peasant movement in Germany grew into the war of 1524-1525. Peasants set fire to castles and monasteries, refused duties, plundered the property of the master. Uniting regardless of religious views, the princes defeated the peasant army and executed Thomas Müntzer, the leader of the rebels. Luther spoke out against the action of the people, calling them a “gang of robbers.”
