Why did Pharaoh Necho need to send the Phoenicians to sail around Africa? Why didn’t this feat of the Phoenicians lead to regular sailing around Africa?
Pharaoh Necho suggested that the path around Africa could be much shorter than the direct path through the Mediterranean Sea, where Greek pirates were swarming with the Phoenician seafarers, subject to the pharaoh. The actual duration of the Phoenicians’ voyage around Africa (about three years) convinced them and the pharaoh that this route was practically useless.
