North Africa was a Byzantine domain. Its inhabitants – Berbers – joined the Arabs and helped them seize the more fertile lands of Iberia (Andalusia) from the Visigoths. In France, the church helped Karl Martell organize a crusade of all Christians against the Muslim interventionists.
