Why did the capitalists make concessions to the workers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

The capitalists made concessions to the workers because they began to unite in trade unions – organizations of workers employed in the same industry. It was trade unions that allowed workers to reduce competition with each other and start an organized strike struggle for their rights. The labor movement limited the capitalists’ ability to profit from increased exploitation. And now the capitalists are faced with two tasks:
1) Development of production technologies
2) Expansion of markets.
