| Why did the Inquisition appear in Spain only three hundred years after the start of a successful reconquista, but was the most brutal in Europe?
In the first centuries of the Reconquista, the lands conquered by Christians remained sparsely populated, so the rulers of Castile and Aragon willingly tolerated non-Christian taxpayers. After the seizure of most of the peninsula, the share of “yesterday’s infidels” in the population of Spain became very large. This worried the rulers and the Catholic clergy, and they instituted the Inquisition to control their unreliable subjects.
