Why did Thomas Wentworth go over to the king’s side and not stay at the head of the opposition in parliament?

Obviously, what Woentworth wanted most was to rule and spearhead reform in England. At first, he tried to achieve this on behalf of parliament, but after its dissolution, he shifted his hopes to royalty.
