| Why did Timur’s protege Khan Tokhtamysh betray him soon after his victory over Mamai and the defeat of Moscow? Was this a personal decision of the khan or was this the will of his soldiers?
Tokhtamysh’s betrayal of Timur was inevitable: the trade interests of the nomads of the Steppe (united by the Golden Horde) and the townspeople of the southern oases were opposite, so that any khan of the Horde became an enemy of any ruler of Samarkand.
