Why didn’t Cardinal Richelieu help Charles I at the beginning of the revolution?

| Until the death of Cardinal Richelieu in 1642, France participated in the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648). In addition, the rulers of France were interested in any troubles in England – this weakened their longtime rival. Until 1645, no one in Europe had foreseen that an established monarchy might collapse, being replaced by a republic; the only republics then were Switzerland and the Netherlands.
