Why didn’t Karl Martell become the “Emperor of the West” and why did his grandson receive this title? Who was who needed more then: the emperor – to the pope or vice versa?

In the 8th century, the popes badly needed protection from unbaptized barbarians and were ready to crown any strong barbarian leader if he was baptized by Rome. Karl Martell would certainly have received the imperial title for defeating the Arabs if he had not offended the Church of France by taking its lands as a reward for his soldiers.
