Why do the Moon and Sun appear flattened at sunrise and sunset?

Due to atmospheric refraction, bodies seem to rise above the horizon, and the lower the object is, the greater the change in its height will be. As a result, the lower edge of a celestial body rises more than the upper one – the object is “flattened”.
